For most African American women, the first time they step into a hair salon is like a rite of passage. Pulling, teasing, straightening, relaxing, women have to go through it all to feel ‘beautiful’ or at least more accepted by white Americans. Thankfully, embracing one’s natural hair has become more and more normal and sought after by women of colour. In the TED talk, A Celebration of Natural Hair, writer Cheyenne Cochrane explains the history behind African American’s relationship with their hair and why women are now accepting their natural hair. Here are 6 reasons why black women are embracing their natural hair.

The ‘health’ trend of eating organic and buying clean products has also made its way through hair products. Women don’t want to harm their hair anymore, they want to keep them healthy with simple products that aren't full of chemicals.
