For most African American women, the first time they step into a hair salon is like a rite of passage. Pulling, teasing, straightening, relaxing, women have to go through it all to feel ‘beautiful’ or at least more accepted by white Americans. Thankfully, embracing one’s natural hair has become more and more normal and sought after by women of colour. In the TED talk, A Celebration of Natural Hair, writer Cheyenne Cochrane explains the history behind African American’s relationship with their hair and why women are now accepting their natural hair.
