For most African American women, the first time they step into a hair salon is like a rite of passage. Pulling, teasing, straightening, relaxing, women have to go through it all to feel ‘beautiful’ or at least more accepted by white Americans. Thankfully, embracing one’s natural hair has become more and more normal and sought after by women of colour. In the TED talk, A Celebration of Natural Hair, writer Cheyenne Cochrane explains the history behind African American’s relationship with their hair and why women are now accepting their natural hair. Here are 6 reasons why black women are embracing their natural hair.

Celebrities and role-models help women embrace their hair



It helps that celebrities and business women like Lupita Nyong'o, Uzo Aduba, Zendaya, Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, Ursula Burns, Solange, Beyonce, Tracee Ellis Ross...the list goes on, wear their natural hair proudly and publicly! These amazing women who are successful as well as beautiful are great role models for African Americans that want to embrace their natural hair.
