6 Reasons Why Black Women are Embracing Their Natural Hair

For most African American women, the first time they step into a hair salon is like a rite of passage. Pulling, teasing, straightening, relaxing, women have to go through it all to feel ‘beautiful’ or at least more accepted by white Americans. Thankfully, embracing one’s natural hair has become more and more normal and sought after by women of colour. In the TED talk, A Celebration of Natural Hair, writer Cheyenne Cochrane explains the history behind African American’s relationship with their hair and why women are now accepting their natural hair. Here are 6 reasons why black women are embracing their natural hair.

Hiding their hair is no longer an option



Wearing wigs and weaves can seem like a healthier option but it isn't. The real hair underneath the wig or weave does not breathe. This can result in having a humid scalp, and it can also lead to hair loss.
