6 Reasons Why Black Women are Embracing Their Natural Hair

For most African American women, the first time they step into a hair salon is like a rite of passage. Pulling, teasing, straightening, relaxing, women have to go through it all to feel ‘beautiful’ or at least more accepted by white Americans. Thankfully, embracing one’s natural hair has become more and more normal and sought after by women of colour. In the TED talk, A Celebration of Natural Hair, writer Cheyenne Cochrane explains the history behind African American’s relationship with their hair and why women are now accepting their natural hair. Here are 6 reasons why black women are embracing their natural hair.

They are embracing their African roots

Women are proud of their African roots and want to show off their unique hair. Western society has always snubbed African curls, and black women have spent hours straightening their hair to blend it but now embracing your roots and where you come from is what makes you unique and different.
